Anti-Money-Laundering

Anti-money laundering (AML) is the set of laws, regulations, and internal procedures designed to detect and prevent criminals from disguising illegally obtained funds as legitimate wealth.

AML requirements touch family offices because they interact with banks, custodians, and investment platforms that are legally obligated to verify the source of client funds. Regulated counterparties typically re-screen clients periodically, and changes in family structure — adding a new entity or a new beneficial owner — can restart the process. Families commonly work with qualified attorneys and compliance specialists to maintain current documentation and respond to institutional requests promptly.
