Asset-Based Fee

An asset-based fee is a recurring charge calculated as a percentage of the total assets a manager or advisor oversees on a client's behalf.

Asset-based fees are sometimes called AUM fees, where AUM stands for assets under management. The fee is expressed in percentage terms — often quoted in basis points — and is typically charged quarterly or annually. As the value of the assets rises or falls, the dollar amount of the fee rises or falls with it.

This structure is one of the most common ways external investment managers are compensated, and it is relevant to any family evaluating the true cost of their investment management arrangements. For families exploring family office costs, understanding every layer of asset-based fees — from underlying fund managers to an overlay advisor — is essential to measuring total cost of ownership.

As a hypothetical illustration: a family with $50 million in managed assets paying an illustrative blended fee of 75 bps across all managers is paying roughly $375,000 per year in asset-based fees alone, before any operational costs. That figure is not a recommendation or benchmark — it simply shows how the math works.

Asset-based fees are sometimes contrasted with flat retainer fees or performance-based fees. A common confusion is assuming asset-based fees align the manager's interests perfectly with the client's; in practice, an asset-based fee rewards asset growth but does not directly penalize underperformance relative to a benchmark. Families typically review fee structures carefully as part of due diligence.
