Estate Manager

An estate manager is a professional hired to oversee the day-to-day operations of one or more private residences, including staff, maintenance, vendors, and household budgets.

When a family owns significant residential property — a primary home, vacation properties, ranches, or a combination — the operational demands of those properties can become a job in themselves. An estate manager (sometimes called a property manager in a residential context, though the role is typically broader) takes ownership of everything required to keep those homes running: hiring and supervising household staff, managing vendor relationships, overseeing repairs and capital projects, tracking household inventories, and reporting on property budgets. The role sits at the intersection of the family office's bill pay and oversight functions and the physical realities of property ownership.

In a larger single-family office, the estate manager may be a direct employee who reports to the chief of staff or office director. In a leaner structure, a family might hire an estate manager independently and have that person coordinate with the office rather than sit inside it. Either way, the estate manager serves as the accountable point of contact for everything happening inside and around the family's homes, reducing the number of decisions that escalate to family members themselves.

A common confusion is conflating this role with a real estate asset manager, who focuses on the investment performance of property holdings. An estate manager is focused on operations and habitability, not returns. A founder who sold her logistics company and subsequently purchased a primary residence, a coastal retreat, and a working ranch would typically find that managing those three properties — with their combined staff, maintenance calendars, and vendor rosters — requires dedicated professional oversight of precisely the kind an estate manager provides.
