Family Assembly

A family assembly is a periodic gathering of all eligible family members — regardless of role — primarily for shared information, relationship-building, and alignment rather than binding decisions.

Where a family council governs, a family assembly connects. It is the forum where the entire family — owners, spouses, young adults, and sometimes rising next-generation members — hears updates on the family office, the portfolio, and shared goals. Families commonly hold assemblies once or twice a year, sometimes alongside a family retreat.

The assembly matters because wealth, left unexamined by the people it affects, tends to create confusion and resentment across generations. A well-run assembly demystifies what the family office actually does, surfaces concerns before they become conflicts, and reinforces the shared values that a family constitution tries to codify. It is educational and relational first, legislative second.

Imagine a founder who sold her logistics company and now has thirty family members across four households. The annual assembly might include a plain-language review of the investment portfolio, a session on financial literacy for young adults, and an open discussion about philanthropic priorities — none of which require a formal vote but all of which build the trust that governance depends on.

A common misunderstanding is that the assembly must vote on major decisions. Most families deliberately keep binding authority with the council or specific committees, so the assembly remains a safe space for honest conversation rather than a site of political maneuvering.
