Family Council

A family council is a smaller, elected or appointed body of family representatives that handles ongoing governance decisions and coordination between the family and its office or businesses.

A family council sits between the full family membership and the professionals running day-to-day operations. Think of it as a standing committee: it meets regularly, sets priorities, approves policies, and acts as the family's formal voice to the family office structure and any operating businesses. Because large families can involve dozens or even hundreds of members, a council makes coordinated decision-making practical.

Families typically define the council's authority in writing — often inside a broader family constitution — spelling out who may serve, how members are chosen, how long they serve, and what decisions require a full family vote instead. Without that clarity, authority can blur and disputes tend to surface at the worst moments.

Consider a three-generation family with two operating businesses and a shared investment portfolio. The family council might approve the annual budget for the single family office, review compensation policies for family employees, and coordinate the agenda for the yearly family assembly — while leaving portfolio execution to professional staff.

A common confusion is treating the family council and the investment committee as the same body. They are distinct: the council focuses on family governance and values, while an investment committee focuses narrowly on portfolio oversight. Mixing the two can slow investment decisions and pull governance conversations off track.
