Family Office

A family office is the organizational infrastructure a family builds around significant wealth to manage investments, finances, legal affairs, and family needs under one coordinated structure.

A family office is not a single, legally defined thing — it is a concept. Some families build a formal standalone entity with a full staff; others coordinate a handful of trusted advisors with no dedicated office at all. What unifies them is the goal: bringing coherent structure to wealth that has grown too complex for a personal accountant and a brokerage account to handle alone. Understanding what a family office actually is starts with letting go of any fixed template.

Investment management is the component most people associate with a family office, but it is only one piece. A family office commonly also handles tax planning, estate administration, legal entity oversight, philanthropic giving, insurance, cash flow, and sometimes the personal logistics of family members. A founder who sold her logistics company might need all of these services coordinated simultaneously — that coordination infrastructure is the family office.

A common confusion is treating "family office" and "wealth manager" as interchangeable. A wealth manager is typically an outside firm managing a portfolio. A family office, by contrast, is the family's own organizational layer — it may hire wealth managers, but it sits above them, directing and overseeing. Another misconception is that a minimum net worth triggers the need for one; in reality, whether a family office makes sense depends far more on complexity than on a specific dollar figure.

The term also covers a wide spectrum of forms — from a single-family office serving one household to a multi-family office serving dozens. Families often land on the model that best balances cost, control, and capability for their particular situation.
