Principal

The family member or members whose accumulated wealth a family office exists to serve and who hold final decision-making authority over the office.

The principal is not simply the wealthiest person in a family — the term refers to whoever holds ultimate authority over the office's direction, spending, and strategy. In a single-family office, that is often the wealth creator: a founder who sold her logistics company, for example, or a family branch that inherited a multigenerational estate. Understanding who the principal is matters enormously when defining the office's purpose, because the office exists to serve that person's or group's needs — investment management being only one of many.

Families with multiple principals — say, three adult siblings who jointly own an operating business — commonly create governance structures that clarify how disagreements are resolved and who can authorize major decisions. Without that clarity, the office can become paralyzed when principals disagree. This is one reason family office structure planning typically starts with people, not entities.

A common confusion is treating "principal" and "beneficiary" as interchangeable. A beneficiary receives economic benefit from a trust or investment vehicle; a principal holds authority. The same person can be both, but children who benefit from a family trust are not automatically principals of the office until authority is formally extended to them.
