Glossario · HNW

High-Net-Worth

An informal label — commonly abbreviated HNW — for individuals or families with significant investable wealth, typically sitting below the ultra-high-net-worth tier, with thresholds that vary by institution.

High-net-worth, or HNW, is one of the most widely used but loosely defined terms in wealth management. Banks, brokerages, and advisors each set their own internal thresholds for who qualifies, and those thresholds shift over time. Like UHNW, the label carries no regulatory meaning — it is a marketing and operational shorthand, not a legal classification.

For family office purposes, the HNW designation is often the starting point of a conversation rather than the end of one. A family at the lower end of the HNW range might be well served by a single advisor or a virtual family office — a lean, outsourced model — while a family at the upper end may be approaching the complexity that makes a more structured operation worthwhile. The economics of a family office depend heavily on the total asset base, whatever label is applied to it.

One common confusion is treating HNW as a prerequisite for family office thinking. Because there is no official minimum net worth for a family office, some families in the HNW range do build simple internal structures, while some UHNW families choose not to. The tier is a useful reference point, not a decision rule.
