Impact Investing

Impact investing means deploying capital into companies, funds, or projects with the explicit intention of generating measurable positive social or environmental outcomes alongside a financial return.

Impact investing sits at the intersection of traditional investment discipline and purposeful giving. Unlike philanthropy, it expects a financial return — though that return target can range from capital preservation to market-rate gains depending on the investor's goals. The defining feature is intentionality: the family sets out to produce a specific, trackable benefit, not simply to avoid harm. Families working through a family office often embed impact investing within their broader asset allocation framework rather than treating it as a separate silo.

Measurement is central to the concept. Families and fund managers commonly use third-party frameworks to assess and report outcomes — tracking metrics such as jobs created, tons of carbon avoided, or households served. Without measurement, the activity is often better described as values-aligned investing rather than true impact investing. This distinction matters when a family is reporting to a foundation board or explaining the portfolio to next-generation members.

A hypothetical example: a three-generation family with a history in renewable energy might direct a portion of their private equity allocation toward growth-stage clean-energy companies, requiring each investment to report defined environmental metrics annually. The investment policy statement would codify how impact criteria interact with financial return thresholds during due diligence.

A frequent confusion is treating ESG and impact investing as synonyms. ESG applies a risk-management lens to existing investments; impact investing actively seeks to produce positive change as a primary objective. The two concepts overlap but are not interchangeable, and families benefit from agreeing on clear definitions before building policy around either.
