Bảng thuật ngữ · MFO

Multi-Family Office

A multi-family office (MFO) is an organization that provides family-office-style services to several unrelated families, typically charging fees for access to a shared professional infrastructure.

An MFO allows families to access the coordination and sophistication of a family office without bearing the full cost of building one independently. By pooling operational overhead across multiple client families, the MFO can employ specialists — investment analysts, tax professionals, estate planners — whose salaries no single family might justify on their own. This shared-cost model is the MFO's core economic rationale, and it is explored further in the context of family office economics.

MFOs come in several forms. Some are independent firms founded specifically to serve wealthy families. Others are affiliated with banks, trust companies, or registered investment advisors (RIAs — firms registered with regulators to provide investment advice). Each model carries different implications for conflicts of interest, service breadth, and pricing. Families commonly evaluate whether the MFO earns revenue from products it recommends, which can affect alignment of interests.

Imagine a recently liquid entrepreneur who sold her technology business. She needs investment oversight, estate planning coordination, and tax consolidation, but her wealth does not yet justify a fully staffed single-family office. Joining an MFO gives her access to those capabilities immediately. The tradeoff is that services are shared and may be less customized than a dedicated office would provide.

A frequent confusion is treating MFOs and private banks as identical. Private banks focus primarily on banking and investment products. An MFO is more broadly an administrative and advisory infrastructure — it may custody assets at a bank but is not itself a bank. Readers exploring the full range of models can review types of family offices for a side-by-side comparison.
