Next Generation (Next-Gen)

"Next generation" (or "next-gen") refers to the younger family members — adult children, grandchildren, and beyond — whom a family office works to educate, involve, and eventually integrate into ownership and governance roles.

Next-gen preparation is one of the most personal and consequential functions a family office performs. Rising family members need to understand how wealth is managed, what governance structures exist, and what responsibilities come with ownership — none of which are automatically absorbed by growing up in a wealthy household. Families commonly create structured programs: financial literacy curricula, apprenticeships on the investment committee, or mentored involvement in philanthropic decisions.

The timing and depth of next-gen integration varies widely. Some families begin financial education in early adolescence; others focus on young adults who are ready to take on defined roles. The goal in most cases is not to produce professional investors but to produce informed, engaged owners who can participate meaningfully in governance, ask good questions of advisors, and uphold the family's values. This connects directly to succession planning and to the family's broader constitution.

Consider a three-generation family whose youngest adult members have never seen the family office's investment policy statement or attended a family assembly. Bringing them into governance gradually — perhaps by observing council meetings before voting — builds confidence and reduces the shock of sudden responsibility at the death of a patriarch or matriarch.

A common confusion is treating next-gen integration as purely financial education. Governance education — understanding how decisions get made, what the council's authority is, and how conflicts are resolved — is equally important and often more neglected. Families that focus only on investment literacy sometimes find rising members unprepared for the relational complexity of shared ownership.
