Philanthropy

Philanthropy is the organized practice of giving money, assets, or time to advance public benefit, treated within a family office as a deliberate, managed function rather than ad hoc charity.

Philanthropy inside a family office goes well beyond writing checks. Families typically treat it as a structured discipline with its own goals, budget, vehicles, and oversight — sitting alongside investment management and estate planning as a core pillar of the office's work. The family office provides the infrastructure to research causes, vet recipient organizations, track grants over time, and measure whether giving is achieving what the family intended.

The vehicles families commonly use vary widely. A donor-advised fund (a giving account held at a sponsoring organization, from which the donor recommends grants) offers simplicity. A private foundation provides maximum control but carries formal governance and compliance requirements. Some families combine both, or layer in charitable trusts. Attorneys and CPAs must be involved in structuring any giving vehicle, as the legal and tax dimensions are significant and jurisdiction-specific.

Consider a founder who sold her logistics company and wanted her adult children involved in giving decisions. Her family office created a formal philanthropy committee, adopted a written grantmaking policy, and allocated a defined annual budget — turning what had been spontaneous donations into a coordinated program. This kind of structure helps prevent duplication, family disagreement, and mission drift across generations.

A common confusion is equating philanthropy with impact investing. Philanthropy expects no financial return — capital is deployed as a grant or gift. Impact investing, by contrast, seeks a measurable social benefit alongside a financial return. The two approaches can complement each other within a family's broader strategy, but they operate under very different frameworks.
