Succession Planning

Succession planning is the ongoing process of preparing for leadership, ownership, and wealth-management transitions across generations in both the family and the family office itself.

Succession planning addresses two related but distinct challenges. The first is ownership succession — how assets, shares in operating businesses, or interests in trusts will transfer to the next generation. The second is leadership succession — who will run the family office, sit on the family council, or manage an operating company when the current leader steps back or dies. Both require deliberate preparation, and families that conflate them often find themselves underprepared on both fronts.

The process typically involves legal and tax structuring (readers must work with qualified attorneys and CPAs, as rules vary significantly by jurisdiction and change over time), but it is just as much a human and organizational exercise. Identifying potential future leaders, giving them meaningful responsibilities early, and creating forums — like a family assembly — for open conversation about the future are all part of the work. The next generation's education and integration is a natural companion to this planning.

Imagine a founder who built a manufacturing business over forty years and also assembled a substantial investment portfolio managed by a small family office. Succession planning for this family might include grooming a non-family CEO for the business, establishing a trust structure for ownership transfer, and identifying which family members will eventually serve on the investment committee. Each track has its own timeline and skill requirements.

A common misconception is that succession planning is a one-time event — a will drafted, a trust signed. In practice, families treat it as a living process, revisited as circumstances, tax laws, and family dynamics evolve. Key-person risk inside the family office itself is one dimension that frequently goes unaddressed until too late.
