Glossaire · UHNW

Ultra-High-Net-Worth

An informal label — commonly abbreviated UHNW — applied to individuals or families whose net worth reaches into the tens of millions of dollars or more, with no single official definition.

Ultra-high-net-worth, or UHNW, is a shorthand used by wealth managers, service providers, and the press to distinguish very large concentrations of private wealth from the broader affluent population. The label carries no legal or regulatory weight, and different institutions draw the line in different places — which is why the term should be treated as a rough signal, not a precise category. Readers working through whether a family office makes sense for them will encounter this term frequently.

The reason the distinction matters in practice is that UHNW families face a qualitatively different set of challenges than those with more modest wealth: complex tax situations, concentrated positions in private businesses, multi-jurisdictional assets, and the need for coordinated legal entities. These complexities are a core reason family offices exist at all. A family office is the organizational infrastructure built to manage that complexity — and investment management is only one piece of it.

A common confusion is assuming UHNW automatically means "has a family office." Many UHNW families are served by multi-family offices or outside advisors rather than a dedicated internal operation. The wealth tier and the structure are separate questions.
