On one side, the argument for including hedge funds, infrastructure, and commodities rests on the idea that a portfolio built only from public stocks and bonds is exposed to the same economic forces simultaneously. During severe market downturns, even "diversified" public portfolios can decline together. A well-chosen diversifier sleeve may reduce that correlation — though historical performance during any one period does not guarantee future behavior.
On the other side, critics note that hedge fund fees compound significantly over time, reducing net returns. The net-of-fees return — what the investor actually keeps after management and performance fees — is the only number that matters, and it is not always better than simpler alternatives. What Families Typically Consider Before Committing

- Strategy clarity: Can the manager explain simply what they do, how they make money, and when the strategy is likely to underperform?
- Liquidity matching: Do the fund's redemption terms match the family's realistic need for that capital?
- Fee math: What does the net-of-fees return need to be for this to add value compared to a simpler alternative?
